RGS-Singapore presents our May event: "A Visitor in the Night: Comet Photography by Avishek Kumar"!
A comet is an ancient wanderer, ice and dust igniting as it nears the Sun, casting a fleeting glow across our skies. For a brief moment, something that may not return for thousands of years becomes visible…and then it’s gone.
Photographing a comet is a race against time and nature. It demands more than skill – it requires precision, patience, and the ability to align weather, landscape, light, and celestial motion in a single, unrepeatable instant. When it works, it is where science meets art, and planning meets instinct – and the result is not just an image, but a magnificent moment of presence.
Avishek doesn’t build these images afterward. He waits for everything to come together in real time, the land, the light, the sky and captures it as it truly happens.
When he chased his first comet, Comet NEOWISE, he drove fourteen hours, twice, for a single shot. Someone asked: "why?" And the answer was simple: some opportunities don’t come back. Not in a year. Not in a lifetime.
This talk is about chasing those moments, and how to be ready when they appear.
Join us at the Hollandse Club Singapore on 14 May 2026 to check out some of Avishek's breathtaking photos of comets captured from different parts of the world, and learn about what it takes to become a comet photographer!
